Rock Skool
A musical couple from New Herrington are hitting high notes with Sunderland’s budding rock stars, after creating Wearside’s very own school of rock.
Lisa French and Robert Andrews started Herrington Rock Skool after they attended a training course at the North East BIC, learning the ins and outs of running their own business from experienced business advisers along the way.
The Rock Skool, which is based in a former post office at New Herrington, delivers lessons on guitar, singing, keyboards and drums six days a week, aiming to develop the rock stars of tomorrow whilst providing those with an interest in music with somewhere to go where they can meet others who share their passion for rock.
“We’ve been delighted with the response from people who are coming here for lessons, they’re telling us that they have always wanted to learn to play instruments, but have never known where to turn,” says Lisa. “The kids who come here are also enjoying making new friends and are already talking about forming their own bands, which we will help them to develop.”
They couple are very experienced musicians, having toured nationally with their band, Hooch Navarro, for many years.
Lisa continues: “Our aim is to get people up and running with their musical instruments, and perhaps allow them to make a living out of doing something they love, like we’ve been able to do.”
“If you have an idea for a business, I’d wholly recommend that you go to the BIC and talk to one of the advisers about it, no matter how crazy you think it sounds. They really know how to help put your ideas into place – our initial plan for Rock Skool went from being a dream to a reality, in six weeks!”
