July 2010 - BIG IDEAS SUMMER BBQ AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION
Technology fans will have a chance to get to grips with the machines which paved the way for our gadget-dominated age, when the North East BIC opens the doors to its retro-techno exhibition on 22nd July.

The BIC, which has been the birthplace of some of the region’s most innovative businesses, has gathered together a range of vintage systems which will be accessible for adults looking for techno-nostalgia, and children who wish to see how the latest gaming systems handled for their parents in the 1970s and ‘80s.
Lisa Smith, manager at the BIC’s Big Ideas facility, said: “Getting your hands back on the technology that was so breathtaking all those years ago is really a joyous experience, and brings back many happy memories.
“I also think young people, who may be using these systems for the first time, will be pleasantly surprised, as often the games have stood the test of time so well that on a playability level they still compete with the titles we currently see on xbox360 and Playstation 3.”
The exhibition aims to provide a historical and interactive display of technology development, demonstrated through the progress of the video games industry from the 1970s to the present day.
“By looking specifically at video games, we’ll present visitors with an extremely fun way of viewing how far technology has come in our lifetimes, and also how the medium has developed from being relatively insignificant less than a few decades ago, to become a major cultural and economic force which now rivals the movie industry.”
The exhibition will feature various zones, including home and office sections, all styled appropriately to highlight not only the technology of bygone years, but also lifestyle and fashion trends of the eras.
“The aim is to allow people to be fully immersed in the era of the system they are using. For example, when using the Spectrum 48K in the 1980s zone visitors will be able to listen to a Walkman and enjoy a Soda Stream drink while waiting for games to load!”
