A video producer from Tyne and Wear, who has produced visuals for some of the region’s most prominent club nights, is expanding his business to offer services to corporate clients.
Liam Carlin, 22 and from Penshaw, started Basic Production in early 2007, following years of creating clips in his spare time while studying. Before establishing the business, he had already created show reels and animated adverts for various local companies, including Newcastle College and Galaxy FM.
Liam Carlin says: “Having started this as a hobby, and a branch of interest from my daily college work, I began to realise that there was a real call for a professional service.”
Becoming aware of this gap in the market for the services he could provide, Liam contacted the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) for assistance in setting up his own video production company.
Alan Gillis, Business Adviser at the North East BIC, says: “Through the skills he has developed in video production by pursuing it as a hobby over the years, there was no question that Liam had the know-how in his particular field.
“However, whilst developing his business plan, he quickly became knowledgeable on how best to perform in industry. I now believe he has the business acumen to go forth and make a real success of Basic Production.”
Since he began trading in March, Liam has mainly concentrated on producing video for the some of the region’s biggest clubs nights including Shindig and Lumen. This has allowed his profile to expand to a point at which his work is now known internationally.
Liam says: “I get great satisfaction from producing work locally and seeing my VJ sets or animated adverts in clubs or bars. I also believe that businesses beyond the club scene could benefit from implementing what I do into their marketing materials. For this reason I have introduced a range of corporate services which Basic Production can offer.”
The services include training videos, content for the internet and animated advertisements.
Alan Gillis says: “As more and more businesses realise how they can use new types of media to their advantage, I believe the need for the type of service that Liam provides through Basic Production will increase significantly.”
