A brand new comedy club opens its doors in Sunderland

Felt Nowt is elated to announce the opening of its second, full-time comedy club. This time, it’s a 60-seater smack in the middle of Sunderland’s culture quarter, at the wonderfully ornate Dun Cow.

Set up with support from social enterprise experts at the North East BIC, Felt Nowt’s comedy cooperative plans to bring the laughs back to Sunderland by establishing a dedicated comedy club in the city.

Launching on Friday, November 26th, the Dun Cow will reignite its comedy history – Laurel and Hardy were known to drop by back in the old days – with Louise Young who has been supporting Alan Carr on tour; Neil Harris who is a home-grown comedy favourite; Stu Edwards who most recently supported Tom Stade on tour; plus your host and local South Shields legend Lee Kyle.

With line-ups featuring the best comedy talent in the area, as well as the best new acts, Felt Nowt has made extra sure you’re in good hands, as each weekend is hosted by one of their top notch comperes, such as Gavin Webster, Sammy Dobson, Lee Kyle, Hal Branson or Si Beckwith.

One of the most unique things about this club is that there are two shows a night, every Friday and Saturday – that’s four shows a weekend – so if you can’t make the early show, you can always make the late show.

“The work and effort that has gone into making Sunderland a vibrant city and cultural hotspot was something Felt Nowt wanted to be part of,” said Si Beckwith, one of the directors of Felt Nowt. “A city with a population the size of Sunderland deserves its own comedy club. It’s about bringing the best acts through regularly for side-splitting shows each weekend. We have some brilliant lineups in store, and we’re excited to see so many new faces at a proper comedy club right on their doorstep.”

The pairing of Felt Nowt and the Dun Cow could not be more synergetic; both value and are dedicated to promoting and supporting North East culture at its finest. The Dun Cow has done this in a warm and delightfully stylish way. After a caring refurbishment, it has been restored to its former glory and is now a stunning, grade two-listed ‘Edwardian gin palace’, a living tribute to its own rich history and heritage, and a brilliant example of everything that is wonderful about the traditional British public house.

Felt Nowt has done much the same for the North East’s comedy scene. As an organisation run by comedians for comedy fans, of course entertainment value is a top priority, but what makes this organisation so unique are its mission and how it’s executed. As a community interest company (CIC), Felt Nowt reinvests all of its profits back into the business with the long-term goals of recognising, building and promoting regional comedy and comedic talent – from beginners to national treasures – and taking comedy into communities that might not otherwise have access to it. Its Board of Directors include local comedians Lee Kyle, Gavin Webster, Lauren Pattison, Hal Branson, John Gibson, and Si Beckwith.

The Dun Cow is located at 9 High St W, Sunderland SR1 3HA. Tickets are £15, £12.50 for concessions.
