Avoid phishing scams

Phishing emails

The Coronavirus pandemic has forced many business owners across the country to change their ways of working. At the BIC, the majority of businesses began to work from home and our IT support team were on hand to set them up for remote working.

As the country emerges from lockdown, it’s important to remain vigilant not only due to the virus, but online too. We’re urging everyone to watch out for online fraudsters who are using the disruption caused by the Coronavirus crisis to con people out of cash.

We’ve recently seen a large increase in phishing emails with many of the topics highlighting Covid-19 issues such as testing, the job retention schemes, fines, information regarding causes or cures. The emails can appear to look like they’re from someone within the target organisation and tend to invite the recipient to open a link to a document or web page shared on the email but there are also many of the usual cons still out there.

They also relate to Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive, Sharepoint or Microsoft Office 365 and Dropbox, with the lure being to reset a Microsoft login password, retrieve hidden or locked away emails, or attend to a full mailbox.

All of these emails attempt to capture your login details or have you click a link or open a document that loads a malicious program that will capture your data over a period of time.
