Climate Action North appoint new director

Community Interest Company, Climate Action North has appointed science and engineering presenter, Julie Harrison, as a director of STEM and Community Engagement.

Julie, who is a STEM ambassador and has been working with young people on the causes of plastic pollution for over a decade, joins Managing Director Sharon Lashley and Content Director Jennifer Clair Robson, to support the community interest company’s initiatives and develop new ones.

Climate Action North was set up three years ago to drive the urgent action that is needed to address the climate crisis. To date they have delivered a range of meaningful action-orientated projects to highlight ways the climate crisis can be addressed and bring businesses, communities and individuals together on practical solutions and ways forward.

Julie said: “Their achievements are impressive and there is an enormous opportunity to expand on this and build awareness even further throughout the North of England and beyond. I am really pleased to be joining Climate Action North at such a critical time and know my years of experience will be an asset to the company.”

Climate Action North initiatives include: Pollinator Parks, Rewilding the North’s Business Parks and other areas; Green Heart, where the team works with schools and students on projects such as litter picks, beach cleans, tree and wildflower garden planting and organising conferences tackling issues such as plastic pollution and rewilding, all of which have attracted high-profile speakers and hundreds of guests.

Sharon said: “We’re delighted to welcome Julie on board. She brings a phenomenal depth of knowledge and experience, which will have an enormous impact in furthering our existing initiatives and partnerships and establishing new and necessary opportunities to continue taking practical action in fighting the climate crisis.”

Julie holds a Masters degree in business and has a keen interest in nature, biodiversity and the outdoors. As well as her STEM ambassador role, she has also developed the concept of ‘One Small Change’ events which will be rolled out to communities alongside the Climate Action North suite of events and conferences.

Sharon concluded: “Julie’s passion for the environment and taking practical action in the context of the climate emergency matches ours and we’re really looking forward to working with her and making a difference through our initiatives and projects.

“Together, we are three business women on a mission to make a difference with fearless, authentic, ethical, compassionate and courageous action. The time for talking is over – today we must act.”
