INTERNATIONAL dishes – along with some traditional British favourites – will be on offer to visitors to The Tall Ships Races Sunderland 2018.

From 10-14 July, the city will play host to 54 sailing ships and their crews from around the world.

And the international theme is echoed in the food and drink on offer throughout the five-day festival.

Caterers from across the North East and beyond have signed up to take stalls and pop-ups at the event, so the anticipated 1.5m visitors can enjoy everything from cakes and coffee to buffalo burgers, noodles, ice cream and waffles.

Four event zones will play host to food retailers of all types and sizes, selling cuisine as varied as Thai, Bangladeshi street food and German bratwurst.

At the Port of Sunderland, catering highlights include French tartiflettes, snow cones from Blyth-based Antoninos, gin and craft ales from Stockton-based Gin Without Borders – and the traditional British seaside staple, fish and chips.

Lebanese food, macaroni, noodles, and ice cream and doughnuts are among the treats in store for visitors to the Town Moor and East End and, at St Peter’s, French and Greek cuisines are the order of the day.
While at the seafront and Summer Streets Festival, visitors can tuck into everything from burgers and sausages to chicken, chips and ice cream.

John Adamson, owner of Ramside Estates, which includes Ramside Event Catering, operating several concessions at the festival, said: “The Tall Ships is one of the most exciting events taking place in the region this year and we’re delighted to be able to play a part in it.

“We have been involved in the catering for the last three Tall Ships events in the North East -in Newcastle, Hartlepool and Blyth – so it’s fantastic to be able to bring our experience and what we know are highly popular food offerings to this event.”

There will also be the chance for shoppers to snap up everything from contemporary art and design to vintage and artisan crafts at Tall Ships Makers’ Market in Event Zone C at St Peter’s Riverside on the north side of the River Wear.

Throughout the five-day festival, more than 50 local businesses and artisan producers will be selling a wide range of locally produced food, drink, and crafts – with plenty of samples on offer.

The goods on sale will include flavoured gins, local ales, home baked brownies, flapjacks and cakes along with handmade tweeds, unusual lamps, home and giftware made from beads, buttons, fabric and wood and handmade candles, soy wax melts, oil burners and lanterns.

Unusual fossils of ancient sea life, oysters and coral will also be on sale along with a wide range of handmade jewellery.

Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council Portfolio Holder for Communities and Culture said: “The Tall Ships Races in Sunderland will be a feast for all the senses.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming people from Sunderland and across the region for a fantastic day out, with so much to see and do.

“We’ve got catering options to suit every taste and plenty of space for people to take a break and enjoy some international or local cuisine.”
