Guest speaker day kicks off new term for Work Discovery Sunderland

The new activities start this month (November 16) for a unique Sunderland programme which helps students develop their employability skills.

The first Work Discovery Sunderland event of the 2016-17 academic year will be a guest speaker day on Wednesday November 16, featuring people from a wide range of business backgrounds.

The event is set to feature several successful business people from across the region including Dominic Murphy, MD at Geek Talent, Joe Ridgeon, Strategic Land Manager for Avant Homes, Kim Walker, Royal Town Planning Institute and Michael Anya of Liebherr.

The guest speaker days are part of the Work Discovery Sunderland programme, which includes specific sector day and culminating in Work Discovery Week which takes place at the end of June 2017.

The event is taking place at the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) at Sunderland Enterprise Park, with pupils from secondary schools across the city given the chance to take part.

Paul McEldon, co-chair of Work Discovery Sunderland explained how these speaker days offer youngsters a rare chance to learn about leading firms and industries in the area.

“The guest speaker days are a great opportunity for young people to hear – and be inspired – by people from all walks of life,” he explained.

“It gives the students the chance to find out all about various career paths and what people do in very different industries.

“One again the first event of the new academic year features a very strong line up of speakers and we are sure that all the pupils who attend will find it really useful.

“It’s all about giving young people the best tools possible to arm them for their future career, and give them everything they need to improve their employability.”
