North East BIC recruits summer interns

The North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) continues to flourish as the region’s leading enterprise agency and business complex with the appointment of two undergraduate summer interns.

Conor Walton, 20, from Chester-le-Street who is studying for a degree in Computing Science, Imaging and Multimedia at the University of East Anglia has joined the BIC’s in-house communications department to help conduct an audit of the BIC’s digital marketing activity.

Also joining the team as an interim PR assistant is Jasmine Singh, 20, from the University of Sunderland. Jasmine will be helping to prepare news releases and coordinate events. She joined the team through the University of Sunderland’s summer internship scheme; a four week placement opportunity which is designed to allow the student to gain hands-on practical work experience in a trusted environment that enables students to put the theory of their degree into practice.

Louise Hardy, the BIC’s Business Mentor said: “In the past year we have helped a dozen businesses to find apprentices or student placements, ten of which have turned into full time employment.

“As an organisation we are committed to preventing a brain drain from the region and volunteer placements and internships are an ideal way for students to gain experience and to see what it is like to work for a north east business before they embark on the next stage of their studies.

“Jasmine and Conor are with the company for a limited time but they are both working on genuine projects so it is an experience that benefits not only the students but the organisation as a whole and it is great to see them both enthusiastically applying their skills”

Nickola Gray, Internship Development Manager added: “The summer internship is a fantastic opportunity to open up the students eyes to the world of work, gaining that valuable experience with companies who understand the challenges of today’s job market and know that any experience the student undertakes, will really add depth to their studies, and hence job prospects when they come to graduate.”
