Embracing the great outdoors while working

Office space Sunderland

In the bustling world of work, it’s easy to get tangled up in endless tasks and deadlines.

Before you know it, you’ve spent the best part of your day at your desk without taking a single moment to step back and recharge.

Here at the BIC, we understand the importance of a well-balanced work environment, and we proudly champion the idea of incorporating breaks and outdoor activities into our daily routines to avoid burnout and improve employee wellbeing.

Below, we explore the many benefits of taking regular breaks and explain how we are actively working to create a nurturing atmosphere for our staff and visitors, which improves wellbeing and productivity.

The power of taking breaks

Breaks are not just a luxury, they are a necessity for maintaining optimal productivity and mental wellbeing in the workplace.

Research has shown that frequent breaks throughout the day can significantly improve focus, creativity, and enhance problem-solving skills.

When we step away from our desks and allow our minds to rest, we return with renewed energy and clarity.

Embracing the great outdoors

One of the things people often tell us is, what they really love about the BIC is our several outdoor spaces, each of which have been thoughtfully designed for staff and visitors to use for a range of purposes.

From spaces to eat and meet, to dedicated areas for work and relaxation, our outdoor spaces are a breath of fresh air!

The outdoor terrace space provides a serene escape from the confines of office walls, fostering a sense of tranquillity, well-being and avoiding burn-out.

We are also fortunate to have a number of riverside walks alongside the winding River Wear, for those who like to ‘meet on the go’.

The ease of taking a break and strolling along the embankment, basking in the sun during summer months, is a privilege that not every office space can offer.

The soothing sights and sounds of nature are also proven to reduce stress, enhance mood, and boost creativity – so for those who like a bit of nature, we have seating areas next to our pollinator parks where you can be at one with nature.

There really is space for everyone!

Community wellbeing initiatives

We go beyond simply providing outdoor spaces; we actively support our tenants and clients in prioritising their wellbeing.

Some of our tenants are looking to set up a walking/running club for those working on our business park that fosters a sense of community and encourages physical activity.

This will not only promote fitness but also help build connections among colleagues, enhancing teamwork and camaraderie.

Additionally, The Sunderland BetterPoints app brought to you by Sunderland City Council is designed to motivate individuals to get active and engage in various physical activities.

Whether it’s walking, cycling, running, or participating in community events, the app tracks, and rewards users for their healthy pursuits.

By earning points for each activity, participants can unlock exciting rewards and incentives, ranging from vouchers to discounts at local businesses!

One of our tenants, Superior Recruitment, has also taken the lead in promoting wellbeing through their Wellness Wednesday Campaign.

The initiative extends beyond the office by exploring various self-care, health, and wellness initiatives. By encouraging their staff and others to participate, they spread awareness about the significance of overall well-being in both personal and professional realms.
