Unlocking the potential of our veterans

Veterans in Business

By Paul McEldon, North East BIC Chief Executive

Here at the BIC, we know the value veterans bring to the business world. Their discipline, leadership and adaptability – skills forged through service – make them natural entrepreneurs.

But we also understand that the transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, especially when it comes to starting a business.

That’s why supporting veterans is a priority for us. As proud holders of the Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award, we’re committed to helping those who’ve served build successful futures in business.

One of the ways we do this is through our Veterans in Business Networking Group, led by our Armed Forces Ambassador and veteran, Anthony McDermott. This group has grown into a vibrant community where veterans can connect, share ideas and learn from each other – and the wider business world.

Veterans in Business

What makes this network unique is its openness. It’s not just for veterans – it’s for any local business who wants to connect, collaborate and support veterans in enterprise. Thisinclusive approach has seen the network grow quickly and new businesses sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Our next event takes place on Remembrance Day – 11 November. Alongside networking opportunities and business support, we’ll hear from a local historian on the impact of military service in our communities and how those experiences have shaped today’s veteran entrepreneurs.

At 10.55am, we’ll join other businesses on site for a short remembrance service, commemorating the occasion together.

Whether you’re a veteran with a business idea, a seasoned entrepreneur, or a business leader keen to support the veteran community – this event is for you.  We’d love to see you there.
