Cleantech pioneer honoured with King’s Award for Enterprise

Kinewell, a British provider of cleantech software, has received a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade by His Majesty King Charles III.

The award was presented to the Kinewell team at their North Tyneside head office on Wednesday [24 March] by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Ms Lucy Winskell, OBE.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the UK. The Award for International Trade recognises companies that have generated significant overseas sales with steep year-on-year growth, without dips, over a sustained three to six year period.

Kinewell’s suite of AI-powered Software, as a Service (SaaS), solutions help make the construction of offshore wind farms easier and more cost-effective and over the past decade have been deployed during the development of offshore wind farms across the globe.

The Lord-Lieutenant said: “I am delighted to present this prestigious award on behalf of His Majesty The King to Kinewell who are quite clearly at the leading edge of software technology which optimises the design of offshore windfarms. Here in Tyne and Wear we can be proud of such a successful company which supports the global offshore wind market.”

Kinewell’s software solutions help identify the best place to position turbines, the most efficient way to lay cables and how to get power back to shore and have been procured by some of the biggest names in energy, from SSE Renewables to Equinor, Eurus Energy and Parkwind.

The award not only recognises Kinewell’s significant export growth, but also the progress the company’s pioneering solutions have made in helping nations across the Americas, Europe and Asia transition to a net zero society by reducing their reliance on oil and gas.

Dr Andrew Jenkins, founder and CEO of Kinewell, said: “It was a huge honour to host the Lord-Lieutenant and receive such a prestigious accolade from His Majesty King Charles III.

“Our state-of-the-art infrastructure optimisation solutions are fast-becoming the go-to software of choice for developers and consultants of offshore wind farms the world-over, helping to speed up development times and significantly reduce costs.

“They are also playing a key role in helping countries decarbonise their power grids, lower energy bills, improve energy security and combat climate change so it is fantastic to see the team’s efforts to support the transition to net zero – which we know is a cause the King also holds close to his heart – being recognised by such an award.”

The King’s award follows hot on the heels of the announcement earlier this month [12 March] that Kinewell has become the first business to secure funding from the North East Accelerate Fund.

The investment, which included a six-figure sum in grant funding, brought the total raised by the company to over £1 million to accelerate technology development, commercialisation and create 10 new jobs.

Dr Jenkins added: “Our team are the absolute backbone of everything we do so it is fantastic that they have been able to share this success by joining us for both the fundraising and award announcements.

“It really does mean the world to them to see their efforts being recognised by such acclaim and backing and hopefully there are yet more positive announcements to follow over the coming weeks and months as we continue to innovate and grow.”
