A Sunderland based entrepreneur who set up his business with support from the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) Ltd is helping to rebuild manufacturing in the area with the launch of his own line of products.

Founded by David Lynch, Lynch Healthcare specialises in equipment for the disabled, sourcing and distributing everything from hoists to specialist bathing accessories.

Following its success in this area, the firm has invested in manufacturing equipment to enable them to produce a range of slings designed to help with such tasks as lifting disabled people from their beds.

David who started his career as an engineering apprentice before setting up his own business after gaining experience establishing a successful branch of a global healthcare company in the region will be producing his range of products from the firm’s base in West Quay, Sunderland. David said:

“Our success stems from the fact that we have designed all of our products with the individual in mind however as they are all rigorously tested to meet Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) standards they appeal to both private occupational therapists and local authorities.

“We have recently taken on two new members of staff and hope to take on more as we develop our range of products, which includes tailored slings.

“The increased demand for our products has enabled us to grow our own product range and expand our premises to include our own manufacturing facility.  I am really excited by the development as not only will it allow us to grow our business but also ensure vital skill sets aren’t lost in the region.”

Lynch Healthcare which now employs 12 members of staff secured support from Sunderland City Council and NEL Fund Managers to help with its expansion plans, and is currently looking at export opportunities.

The move represents the latest stage in the growth of Lynch Healthcare, which began with only two people and a first year turnover of around £260,000.

Chris Craig, business adviser at the BIC worked with David to develop the company’s business plan.  He said:

“Here at the BIC we help over 150 individuals to start their own businesses every year, and our survival rates outstrip the national average with over 75 per cent still trading after their third year of business.

“David has always had a focused strategy and a clear plan for how he has wanted to develop his business.  He is an inspiration to young entrepreneurs everywhere and it has been wonderful to watch Lynch Healthcare go from strength to strength.”

David will be detailing his business journey at the Young Enterprise Regional Awards Final, an event designed to encourage and showcase the next generation of entrepreneurs at the Gateshead Marriott on Thursday 12th June.

David said: “This event does much to promote enterprise in our schools and if we are to progress as a region it is vital young people have access to opportunities whether they decide to go into full time education, vocational training or to set up their own businesses.

“I was fortunate enough to win the Journal Newcomer of the Year Award in 2010 and having seen how innovative some of these young people are I know there is a great deal of entrepreneurial talent in our region, and I am honoured to be involved.”
