A cancer diagnostic company located at the North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) has expanded its laboratory space from 300 sq ft to 1555 sq ft.

Arquer Diagnostics established in 2006 and also have a presence Cambridge, have expanded in size as well as staff now employing seven at their branch in Sunderland.
The company which focuses on developing urine-based tests for cancer of the bladder and prostate have taken extra lab space which will not only help them to expand their current research but extend it to help detect other types of cancer. Dr Ian Campbell, CEO explains the reason for the expansion:
“We recognise the availability of local talent in the region. The North East is a fantastic location to tap into different skill sets including research and development scientists and product management. We have also been able to work with some North East companies for the lab equipment and supplies.”

Ian adds why the company remains at the BIC:
“The space is exactly what we need and having the flexibility to grow is paramount to our business needs.
“We have good quality broadband at the BIC which means that we can use communication to our advantage; I often work remotely and the facilities enable me to communicate with the duel sites effectively.”
The company have recently raised additional funding from Longwall Venture Partners, Esperante Ventures and local investment from Northstar Ventures, who are tenants at the BIC’s sister site in Darlington. In addition the Company has just recently received £10k from Sunderland Council to assist with bringing jobs into the region.
