Oceander CIC are delighted to announce the appointment of Anthony McDermott as a Non-Executive Director, strengthening the organisation’s commitment to tackling homelessness, improving wellbeing and creating long-term positive change across Sunderland and the wider North East.
Anthony brings a wealth of experience in social enterprise development, income generation, partnerships and community engagement. A well-known figure across the North East social enterprise sector, Anthony has supported hundreds of organisations, charities and community projects through his work in business support and social impact development.
Oceander CIC was established to provide a more person-centred and compassionate approach to supported accommodation and homelessness services. Founded by Matt Blair, Emmanuel Lewu and Mia Fang, the organisation focuses not only on housing provision but also on addressing the root causes of homelessness through tailored support, wellbeing services and pathways towards independence.
Anthony has previously worked alongside the Oceander team during the early development of the CIC and supported the transition towards becoming a purpose-driven social enterprise.
Anthony McDermott said: “From the very beginning, what stood out about Oceander CIC was that this wasn’t about profit – it was about people. The team genuinely care about creating long-term change and restoring dignity for individuals who may have faced incredibly difficult circumstances.
I’ve seen first-hand the passion, ambition and empathy that drives the organisation and I’m incredibly proud to now formally join the board as a Non-Executive Director. Sunderland needs organisations willing to do things differently and Oceander CIC are building something that has the potential to create real and lasting impact within our communities.”
Co-director Emmanuel Lewu said: “Anthony has been part of our journey from an early stage and has consistently challenged and supported us to think bigger about our impact. His experience within the social enterprise sector, strategic partnerships and community development will be a huge asset as we continue to grow.
Our aim has always been to provide more than just accommodation. We want to help people rebuild confidence, independence and a sense of belonging. Having Anthony join the board strengthens that vision.”
The organisation currently operates supported accommodation facilities in Sunderland and continues to expand its services, partnerships and community-based support offer across the region.
Future plans include the development of additional supported living provision, wellbeing programmes, skills development opportunities and stronger collaboration with local organisations and public sector partners.
