SUNDERLAND students can get a taste of working life in a range of sectors next month (March), thanks to a unique programme.
Work Discovery Sunderland aims to prepare young people for the world of work through a series of organised events over the year, giving them hands-on experience in a range of professions.
And students hoping to pursue a career in construction, contact centres, health sciences or the tech sector can get the inside track with the choice of four sector days in early March.
The Construction Sector Day takes place on 5 March and will take students to sites operated by Gentoo, Siglion and Sunderland College in partnership with Engie.
They will find out about the range of career paths in construction, meet the teams working on different projects at each site and learn more about further education and apprenticeship routes into the industry.
Then, on 6 March, there is a choice of two events, a Contact Centre Sector Day and a Health Sciences Sector Day.
Those hoping to learn more about contact centres will spend time at the BGL Group, based at Sunderland Enterprise Park, taking part in practical activities and gaining an overview of the contact centre world and the variety of roles there.
Or, students aiming to pursue a career in health sciences can make the most of the sector day to get a better understanding of the industry and the positions within it.
And future tech moguls can sign up for the Tech Sector Day, taking place at Sunderland Software Centre on 7 March, to meet those working in the sector for a valuable insight into the types of businesses in the region and what they do.
“We have a fantastic few days of activities planned for young people in the city, to give them first-hand experience of a career they may like to pursue in the future,” said John Green, co-chair of Work Discovery Sunderland and retail liaison manager at the Bridges.
“We’re delighted to have a range of organisations taking part to show the students what it is they do in their day-to-day work and we hope it will answer some of the questions these young people might have about the next steps they need to take to advance towards their chosen careers.”
The Work Discovery Sunderland programme organises a range of activities for young people over the year to give them insight into different career options, which more than 6000 students have benefited from since its launch.
The year culminates in Work Discovery Week, which is supported by a range of organisations including Sunderland City Council, SAFC, the University of Sunderland, Sunderland College, the Bridges and many others.
