For the past 25 years the cinematic experiences of millions around the globe have been quietly shaped from the banks of the Wear in Sunderland.

From blockbuster cinemas in Dubai and Dolby installations in America, the work of EOMAC has reached over 60 countries. Yet few in the region may even know the company exists.

Operating from an unassuming industrial unit at the North East BIC, EOMAC has become one of the world’s leading providers of acoustic and interior solutions for cinemas and public spaces.

Matthew Elliott, President of EOMAC, said: “It might come as a surprise to many that cinemas across the world have been imagined and created on the banks of the Wear in Sunderland. But we’ve certainly made our mark and it’s something we’re incredibly proud of. We’re a worldwide leader.”

Founded in Toronto, Canada, EOMAC established its UK base in Sunderland in 2000 when its founder, Mark Elliott, personally selected the unit at the BIC while it was still under construction.

“EOMAC is a Sunderland success story which wouldn’t have happened without the BIC,” added Matthew. “From day one, we knew we were in the right place. We’re proud of our early establishment here at the BIC, and our long-standing association with them.”

Today, the company employs 18 staff locally, with a wider network of more than 30 subcontractors supporting projects across Europe, as well as offices in Dubai and Toronto.

The Sunderland team manages everything from design and logistics to installation and export, with materials sourced from across the world.

Despite its international footprint, EOMAC remains proudly rooted in Sunderland and credits the BIC with playing a vital role in the company’s journey, offering flexible space, business support and a collaborative environment that has enabled long-term growth.

EOMAC’s work is trusted by major cinema chains including Odeon, Cineworld and Vue, and its installations have featured in everything from multiplexes and VIP screening rooms to historic cinemas and cultural hubs.

Over the years, the company has evolved alongside the cinema industry itself, helping operators reimagine cinema space for comfort, acoustics and atmosphere. What began with traditional fixed seating has expanded to lounge-style designs, reflecting the changing expectations of audiences and the rise of experiential cinema.

Now in its fifth year post-COVID, when cinemas around the world closed overnight, EOMAC is not only rebuilding but expanding – supplying demand from operators who are investing in upgrades and diversifying beyond cinema into commercial, architectural and public spaces.

Its acoustic wooden panels, originally developed for cinema environments, are now widely used in arts venues, civic buildings, schools, libraries and even crematoriums, combining aesthetic appeal with acoustic performance.

To mark its milestone anniversary, EOMAC hosted a celebration event, welcoming directors from Canada and Dubai to Sunderland for the first time, along with members of the BIC Board and representatives from Sunderland City Council.

Paul McEldon, Chief Executive of the BIC, said: “This is a fantastic Sunderland success story, and it was a privilege to have the whole EOMAC family together on Sunderland soil for the first time to celebrate.

“Their journey from a single unit at the BIC to a global leader in cinema and acoustic design is testament to the power of innovation, resilience and long-term partnership. We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in their story and look forward to the next chapter.”

Cllr Kevin Johnston, Sunderland City Council portfolio holder for Housing, Regeneration and Business, said: “For over 25 years, EOMAC has played a key role in not only powering the sound behind summer blockbusters but also shaping the feel, interior design and experience of cinemas across the world — all from its base at the BIC in Sunderland.

“The sustained success of EOMAC is a shining example of the global impact our city’s businesses can achieve. The firm’s remarkable journey shows how innovation, craft and ambition can and does thrive here in Sunderland.”
