Sunderland-based digital agency, Northern Digital, is building a forward-thinking business with the support of the North East BIC – bringing a family story full circle.
The BIC has become more than just a base for founder Dave Head; it has become a community woven into his family’s entrepreneurial history for over 25 years.
For Dave the BIC is a “home from home” as he spent his childhood watching his late mother working for an engineering firm from 1999, and then going on to set up FS Design in 2002, designing for industry giants Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover, located in Unit 9.
Now years later, Dave has returned to those same corridors to build a future facing legacy as he expands his digital offerings. Since taking space in the BIC’s dedicated coworking space, Northern Digital has evolved from a freelance venture into a specialist in brand identity and automation, streamlining operations for clients such as WE-AR VR and Menopause Medical.
Northern Digital focuses on helping organisations simplify complex processes, using AI and automation to save time and improve decision making, a service not previously offered.
Dave Head, Founder of Northern Digital, said: “I’ve been coming to the BIC since I can remember, so being back here now feels like coming home. Before setting up the agency, I reached a point where I felt limited by other people’s systems and processes. Running my own business isn’t just a job, it’s who I am.”

Since basing the business at the BIC, Dave has built a growing portfolio of retained clients across healthcare, software, and immersive technology. Alongside his technical expertise, Dave credits the BIC’s business support and culture as a major factor in his growth, working closely with Business Support Advisers; John Forth, Hina Joshi and Debbie Simpson.
Paul McEldon OBE, Chief Executive at the North East BIC, said: “It’s stories like Dave’s that truly showcase the heart of the community here at the BIC. It is a privilege to see the legacy his late mother has left behind come full circle, with Dave returning years later to build his own successful business in the very same place.”
Dave added: “The support has been massive – from funded services to advice and introductions. There is a huge sense of community here; coworking and networking help combat the isolation of running a business solo.”
The agency is also committed to supporting local talent. University of Sunderland student, Alex Clennell joined the team as a funded intern earlier this year and, under Dave’s mentorship, has already transitioned into a professional project-based supplier.
Looking ahead, Dave is focused on building long term partnerships with clients. He has also set a personal goal to secure a permanent office at the BIC to follow in his mother’s footsteps and complete his full-circle journey.
